Course Overview

The Basic Portuguese (A1) course is designed for absolute beginners who wish to acquire the foundational skills needed to communicate in European Portuguese. The course develops key competencies in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in everyday situations, using clear and simple language.
This course is aligned with the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), enabling learners to engage in basic interactions and manage common tasks such as introductions, asking for directions, or ordering food with confidence and clarity.

Course Objectives

The general objective of this course is to introduce learners to the basics of Portuguese, enabling them to comprehend and use simple expressions and phrases in everyday situations. Learners will develop skills to:

  • Understand and respond to familiar questions related to personal and family information;
  • Engage in simple interactions when the conversation partner speaks slowly and clearly;
  • Recognize and use basic vocabulary related to daily life (food, shopping, directions);
  • Read and understand simple texts such as signs, advertisements, and menus;
  • Write brief notes and messages related to immediate needs.

Schedule

Module 1 – Personal Information and Introductions

  • Formal and informal greetings
  • Introducing oneself and others
  • Asking and answering about name, nationality, age, and profession
  • Personal pronouns and key verbs: ser, estar, chamar-se
  • Countries, languages, and nationalities

Module 2 – Daily Life and Routine

  • Regular verbs in the present tense
  • Everyday actions and habits
  • Days of the week, time, and parts of the day
  • Frequency expressions

Module 3 – Family and Personal Relationships

  • Vocabulary related to family and friends
  • Verbs: ter, viver, gostar
  • Descriptive and possessive adjectives
  • Talking about people and relationships

Module 4 – Food and Shopping

  • Vocabulary: food, drinks, meals
  • Situations in restaurants, cafés, supermarkets
  • Verbs: comer, beber, querer, preferir
  • Numbers, quantities, and prices
  • Functional dialogues for purchasing and ordering

Module 5 – The City and Transport

  • Places and buildings in the city
  • Public services and transportation
  • Asking for and giving directions
  • Verbs: ir, estar, ficar
  • Prepositions of place

Module 6 – Health, Services and Practical Situations

  • Basic health vocabulary and symptoms
  • Booking medical appointments
  • Common emergencies and pharmacy interactions
  • Useful phrases in unforeseen situations

Module 7 – Discovering Portugal: Culture and Everyday Life

  • Key facts about Portugal (regions, cities, traditions)
  • Portuguese lifestyle and social habits
  • Festivals, gastronomy, and daily routines
  • How to adapt and interact respectfully with local culture
  • Introduction to cultural dos & don’ts

Price

Each quotation is personalized and depends on several factors, such as the number of participants, the number of training hours, the location of the course, and any additional services requested.
The training can be funded through programs such as Erasmus+ (KA1 – Learning Mobility), among other European support mechanisms. For more information about funding, participants should contact their sending organization or their country’s National Agency directly.

Certificate

A Certificate of Participation is awarded to participants who attend at least 80% of the sessions and demonstrate consistent engagement and commitment throughout the training.


Schedule

The time of classes, whether in the morning or afternoon is determined by the provider. The schedule may vary considerably based on participants’ preferences and the trainer’s discretion regarding any modifications.
